A call for innovations tht change the (organic) world Organic Eprints
James, K.; Akyüz, M.; Niggli, U.; Ramprasad, V.; Chable, V..
Recent developments in organic farming and consumption show dynamic growth in markets; new uptake of Organic Agriculture by farmers, however, has been slow. Hindrances appear to be production problems or lack of trust by the farmers that organic methods can solve farming problems, such as fertilization, plant protection, animal health, efficient use of workforce, marketing diversity etc. While in some cases those problems can be solved through learning existing and regionally practiced methods, innovations are imperative to make organic farming competitive and a viable alternative farming system. OFIA, the Organic Farming Innovation Award, part of the Organic World Congress, highlights outstanding innovations and publishes priorities for innovative...

A Combination of Traditional Turkish and Japanese. Agriculture in Afyon Bașmakçı Organic Eprints
Ersöz, Vehbi.
Farming since 1983, Vehbi Ersoz always thought there were some problems with the conventional farming methods. Using a different pesticide for each varmint and a different fertilizer for each missing substance in the soil made him question the function and procedures in conventional agriculture. Favoring a more holistic perspective in agriculture, he tried many methods to enrich the soil and increase the soil microorganisms, which in turn do the actual work. In his region he brought many leading and innovative techniques to life. Some of them are greenhouse farming, organic farming, biodynamic agriculture and Shumei method of agriculture. As a side benefit of applying many different techniques, he discovered that methods applied in one philosophy, may in...

A Comparative Analysis of Organic and Conventional Farming trough the Italian FADN Organic Eprints
Cisilino, Federica; Madau, Fabio A..
This paper presents some results from a wider research on economic and environmental sustainability of organic farming. It aims to compare organic and conventional farming in order to identify some of the main differences between those groups of farms that participated in the official Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN)-2003. The study is organized in two sections. The first part, after a brief literature review of the most recent statistical methodologies applied to identify the two similar groups of farms, presents some key economic variables (production, costs and revenues) and the most widely-used structural, economic and balance sheet indexes. The second part describes findings from a case study on the Italian fruit-growing sector. A non-parametric...

A comparative study of organic lupine and fava bean crops in a Mediterranean environment. Organic Eprints
Hadjigeorgiou, Dr Ioannis; Sagou, Miss Vasiliki; Sagos, Mr Dimitrios; Bilalis, Prof Dimitrios; Moustakas, Prof Nikolaos.
Organic Animal Farming (OAF) systems hold a major part in Organic Agriculture (OA). Alternative protein crops are essential in the development of OAF in order to substitute technically and economically non-acceptable protein sources in Organic Animal feeding. A study, aiming to compare white lupine (Lupinus albus cv Multitalia) and fava bean (Vicia faba cv Vesuvio) crops, was undertaken in Central Greece. The study compared the two plant species under organic or conventional management regimes in terms of quantity and quality produced. There were no productivity or quality differences between the regimes.

A comparison between organic and integrated apple production: First results after 5 years of observation Organic Eprints
Kreuzwieser, Andreas; Kelderer, Markus.
Organic apple production is of increasing commercial importance throughout Europe, but especially in South Tyrol where about 25% of the whole European organic apple crop is produced. In organic apple production, producers face the challenge of choosing varieties that are both in demand and also resistant to the main pests and diseases. Every now and then, the question arises, if yields, losses and profitability are different in integrated and organic orchards and in how great are the differences between single apple varieties. In 1999 the Laimburg Research Centre started a field trial to observe the effects of different cultivation methods on 18 apple varieties in a randomised block design. In the first four years of production, significant...

A comparison of energy use in organic and conventional agriculture in Spain Organic Eprints
Alonso, Antonio M.; González, Rodrigo; Foraster, Laia; Guzmán, Gloria I.; García, Roberto.
The current situation of worldwide concern over the emission of greenhouse gases and its effect on the climate demands an evaluation, from the perspective of energy efficiency and more specifically of non-renewable energy sources, of tendencies for change in the management of agricultural systems that have arisen in recent years. This article uses energy balances to evaluate the contribution of organic agriculture to the increase in the energy efficiency of Spanish agriculture. The results show the higher nonrenewable energy efficiency (NREE) and the lower use of nonrenewable energy (NRE) in organic systems compared with conventional ones. Nevertheless, agricultural systems in general could still improve their energy efficiency.

One of the primary challenges of our time is develop sustainable farming systems that can feed the world with minimal environmental impact. Some studies argue that organic farming systems are best because these have minimal impact on the environment and are positive for biodiversity. Others argue that no-tillage systems are better because such systems save energy and preserve soil structure and quality. A third group argues that conventional farming systems are best because yield per hectare is highest. However, so far, systematic comparisons of major arable production systems are rare and often it is difficult to compare the advantages and disadvantages of farming systems in a systematic way due to differences in soil/site characteristics and management....

A comparison of organically and conventionally grown vegetable crops: results from a 4-year field experiment Organic Eprints
Tabaglio, Prof. Vincenzo; Gavazzi, Dott. Carolina; Nervo, Dott. Giuseppe.
A four-year field trial (2004-2007) was carried out to compare performances of organic and conventional farming systems in the Po Valley (Northern Italy). Four vegetable crops were grown in the sequence: 2004 – processing tomato; 2005 – bean followed by savoy cabbage; 2006 – processing tomato; and 2007 – zucchini. The experimental design was a split-plot with four replicates, the management system being the main factor (OF, organic farming vs. CF, conventional farming) with the rate of nitrogen fertilisation as the secondary factor. N efficiency of the organic fertilizers was assumed as being 50-75%). In all four of the years studied, the two farming systems did not show significant differences in marketable yields for any vegetable crops. The reduction in...

A comparison of soil properties under organic and conventional farming in Australia Organic Eprints
Nachimuthu, Gunasekhar; Kristiansen, Paul; Lockwood, Peter; Guppy, Chris.
Organic farming is an alternative to conventional farming for providing sustainable crops with high export demand. This review analyses research findings on organic farming in Australia, with an emphasis on soil health. Several reports have indicated that organic farm management generally improves soil physical properties in Australia and elsewhere. Although low nitrogen (N) availability can constrain yields, organic farmers can improve N supply through legume green manures. Plant available phosphorus (P) is a more serious limiting factor in organic farming, particularly in Australia with naturally low P levels. Phosphorus is less easily replaced in the soil than N, and there is a need for alternate sources of organic-certified P and methods to enhance P...

A COMPARISON OF STRATEGIES FOR WEED MANAGEMENT IN NATURE FARMING Organic Eprints
Sangakkara, U.R.; Amerasekera, P.; Bandaranayake, P.R.S.D..
Weeds are a major problem in organic or Nature Farming systems and mechanical methods are generally used for weed control. However either mulching or growing crop in-between rows of the principal crop offers scope as a means of protecting soil and suppressing weeds. Field studies thus evaluated the impact of either a mulch or growing two intercrops as possible management strategies for controlling weeds of vegetables grown in major and minor seasons of the tropics under a Nature Farming regime. All three strategies controlled weed numbers, their biomass and increased crop yields. However the least beneficial impact was from the dead leaf mulch, while the highest degree of weed control and increments in crop yields was with the green manure intercrop. The...

A Conceptual Framework for Soil management and its effect on Soil Biodiversity in Organic and Low Input Farming Organic Eprints
Koopmans, Dr. C.J.; Smeding, Dr. F.W..
Learning how to manage beneficial soil biological processes may be a key step towards developing sustainable agricultural systems. We designed a conceptual framework linking soil management practices to important soil-life groups and soil fertility services like nutrient cycling, soil structure and disease suppression. We selected a necessary parameter set to gain insight between management, soil life and soil support services. The findings help to develop management practices that optimise yields, soil fertility and biodiversity in organic farming.

A Credit Point System for assessing and enhancing biodiversity at the farm scale – and beyond Organic Eprints
Zellweger-Fischer, Judith; Birrer, Simon; Jenny, Markus; Stoeckli, Sibylle; Pfiffner, Lukas.
Conclusions The Credit Point System is a suitable tool to assess biodiversity at the farm scale. The resulting CPS score reflects biodiversity efforts made by farmers on their land. The CPS as an assessment tool and the uptake of biodiversity directives in a label programme for sustainable and wildlife friendly foods have opened up new perspectives towards promoting farmland biodiversity at a large scale.

A critique of methodologies for the comparison of organic and conventional farming systems Organic Eprints
Lee, Howard; Fowler, Susan.
This paper was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference of the Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR). A review is presented of comparative studies of organic and conventional farming systems, with a special focus upon economic criteria. The different categories of comparison methodologies are critically reviewed. Conclusions are that classic experimentation has a valuable part to play but that more qualitative assessment can also be useful and should be encouraged. Careful allowance should be made for major background differences in management when comparing financial profitability. Longer term case studies, which try to monitor organic systems in their own right, should also be encouraged.

A decision support model simulating the vitamin supply over the year on a farm Organic Eprints
Mogensen, Lisbeth; Kristensen, Troels; Jensen, Søren K..
The aim of this new project is to develop a prototype of a decision support model simulating the feed and vitamin supply during a year to different groups of animals (calves, heifers, dry cows, cows in early and late lactation) on a farm self-sufficient with feed. The model takes into account that the content of vitamin depends on choice of crops, utilization method, cutting date, conservation method and duration of storage together with traditional optimizing the feed-ing scheme.
